AI chatbot development cost in 2026: the build price and the price of every conversation
Updated · our quoted ranges, at ₹95 = $1, ₹127 = £1 and ₹25.9 = AED 1 on 3 November 2026
Quick answer
A custom AI chatbot costs ₹2.5–5 lakh ($2,500–5,500) to build as a website or WhatsApp bot that answers from your documents and hands over to a person, and ₹5–10 lakh ($5,500–10,500) as an in-product assistant that takes actions, with routing, metering and per-plan caps. After launch every conversation has its own cost: on our plant assistant a hard turn measured about $0.01 and a simple one $0.0004. These are our quoted ranges; the fixed price comes out of a two-week Discovery Sprint.
How much does it cost to build an AI chatbot?
A chatbot has two budgets: building it once, and paying for every conversation afterwards. The build range depends on what the bot may do, how many channels it lives on and how a person takes over. The running cost depends on how many turns go to a larger model.
Website or WhatsApp bot
₹2.5–5 lakh
$2,500–5,500
Answers from your documents, with handover to a person.
The bot tier answers your customers' real questions from your own help articles and documents, on one channel (usually the website widget or the messaging app your customers live in), within written topic guardrails, and hands the chat to a person with the transcript and the lead's details when it should.
- UK, for reference
- £2,000–4,000
- UAE, for reference
- AED 9,500–19,500
In-product assistant
₹5–10 lakh
$5,500–10,500
Takes actions in your product, with routing, metering and per-plan caps.
The assistant tier lives inside your product and changes things there: orders, forms or records, through typed operations with permissions and undo. It routes each turn to a small or larger model, meters every call and caps messages per plan, with a fallback when a provider fails.
- UK, for reference
- £4,000–8,000
- UAE, for reference
- AED 19,500–38,500
Our quoted ranges for builds of this size, not a client's fee. Dollars, pounds and dirhams are the rupee range at ₹95 = $1, ₹127 = £1 and ₹25.9 = AED 1 on 3 November 2026, rounded to the nearest 500: the price is the same wherever you are. Clients in India are quoted and invoiced in rupees and everyone else in US dollars, so the pound and dirham figures are for reference. Every app type is compared in the App Development Cost Index 2026, and the build itself is described on AI Chatbot Development.
What pushes a chatbot quote up?
Chatbot quotes swing on a handful of choices. Each one below comes from ConferBot, Herb, Forth or Copilotly, tagged with the tier where it usually lands.
Features
What it may doAssistant
Answering questions is the bot tier. Changing an order, a form or a record needs typed, undoable operations: in AskForth, every change Forth makes is one step the user can undo.
Scripted flows beside the AIBot
Bookings, order status and the top questions are cheaper and more reliable as flows. ConferBot runs a scripted flow first, the AI agent for open questions, then a person.
Knowledge it answers fromBot
A set of help articles is the low end. Live catalogues and records that change daily need a data layer kept current; Herb answers from fact cards built from a catalogue of 381,479 species, 5,071 with verified care profiles.
Several narrow assistantsLater
Copilotly went narrow on purpose: 131 specialist copilots across 20 domains, with disclaimers on the legal, health and finance ones. Each specialist is configuration and testing.
Integrations
ChannelsBot
One website widget is the low end. ConferBot publishes one bot to 13 targets, from the web widget to messaging channels and mobile SDKs; each channel has its own formats, limits and approval rules.
Model routing and fallbackAssistant
Herb sends a turn to the larger model only when it carries a photo, symptom words, two or more questions, more than 220 characters, or comes 12 or more turns into a thread; otherwise the small one answers. If a provider fails, it falls back to the cheaper model, then a fixed answer.
CRM and lead captureLater
Worth connecting once the bot is good enough to qualify a lead. ConferBot lists 19 native integrations.
Customers bringing their own AI keyLater
For B2B products where customers want to own the provider and the bill. ConferBot's bots run on the customer's own key across 21 providers.
Roles
Who reads the conversationsBot
A transcript by email is cheap. A live shared inbox where any agent can take over with the history is a real-time product of its own.
Who builds the botsLater
A bot you own, built once with us, is the range on this page. A platform where your customers build bots, like ConferBot, needs a visual builder, templates and multi-tenant billing: that is SaaS, priced as SaaS.
Plans with message limitsAssistant
Herb's paid plans allow 50 and 200 messages a day, read from one table that also writes the upgrade message, and reset at midnight UTC.
Compliance
Topic guardrailsBot
What the bot may and may not discuss, written down and enforced. The model phrases the answer; it does not decide safety, prices or policy.
When to hand overBot
ConferBot escalates on negative sentiment, low confidence, a turn limit or a time limit, and passes the transcript with the lead's details.
Answers that admit gapsBot
Herb says so when a fact is missing and gives toxicity only from published records, rather than guessing.
Conversation dataBot
Chats hold personal data. Retention, deletion and who can read transcripts are decided in discovery, under the data law of your market.
A support bot vs an in-product assistant
The two tiers answer different questions. A bot answers your customers; an assistant does work inside your product. Many teams start with the bot, read three months of transcripts, and only then decide what the assistant should be allowed to do.
| Part | Website or WhatsApp bot | In-product assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Answer common questions from your documents | Take actions in your product on the user's behalf |
| Channels | One: the website widget or one messaging app | Inside your web or mobile product |
| Knowledge | Help articles and documents | Your live records, read through your own API |
| Models | One model with a cost cap | Per-turn routing between a small and a larger model, with fallbacks |
| Safety | Topic guardrails and handover to a person | Typed operations, permissions and undo for every change |
| People | A shared inbox or a transcript to your team | Plan limits per user and an upgrade path |
| Measurement | Cost per conversation known before launch | Every call metered and shown per feature and per plan |
Choose the bot when the problem is a support inbox full of the same questions. Choose the assistant when the problem is users who cannot find or finish things in your product.
What a chatbot costs per conversation, once it is live
A chatbot's running cost is set per turn, not per month, and it is known before launch because we meter it. On Herb, LeafRanger's plant assistant, development telemetry put a turn on the larger model at about $0.01 and a turn on the small model at $0.0004, roughly 25 times less. That gap is why routing pays for itself at volume.
- A turn on the larger modelPhoto, symptom words, several questions or a long thread (Herb, July 2026 telemetry)$0.01
- A turn on the small modelEverything else; one verified live turn used 1,209 tokens in and 251 out$0.0004
- An AI-built form, primary modelAskForth's 15-form benchmark, average tokens per form8,588 tokens
- The same form, cheaper modelAbout 30% fewer tokens; 14 of 15 forms built fully clean6,096 tokens

- Hosting the inbox and the botSocket servers for the live inbox, plus storage for transcriptsServer time
- Maintenance after launchCare ₹20,000 ($210) · Grow ₹45,000 ($470) · Partner ₹95,000 ($1,000), a monthfrom ₹20,000
Herb's paid plans are not switched on yet, so these are development figures, labelled as such on running costs. Put your own volumes into the LLM API cost calculator, and if a live bot's AI bill is already growing, the Maps and AI cost audit finds why. Maintenance plans are priced on app maintenance plans.
How long does a custom chatbot take?
A focused bot is quick to build; most of the time goes into reading your real questions first. The last week of a chatbot project is always spent on transcripts, not code.
- Week 1
Read the real questions
Your recent conversations and tickets grouped, each group matched to a source of truth or marked for a person.
- Week 2
Prototype and test
A working test bot on your knowledge, run against real questions, with the cost per conversation measured.
- Milestone 1
Build with guardrails and an inbox
The bot on its first channel with guardrails, handover, the shared inbox, metering and caps.
- After launch
Tune and add channels
Transcripts reviewed with you, gaps filled in the knowledge, routing tuned and new channels added one at a time.

How a chatbot project is paid
A chatbot is priced like any build: a fixed fee for discovery, then a fixed price in milestones. The difference is that the Discovery Sprint also hands you an estimate of the cost per conversation.
Discovery Sprint: ₹1,50,000 ($1,600), 2 weeks
Scope, user flows, a clickable prototype, the architecture, a risk list and a fixed-price quote in milestones. Paid up front; the full fee is credited to the build if it starts within 60 days of the walkthrough.
Price, milestones and a cost per conversation
The fixed build price, what each milestone contains, and the measured cost per conversation from the test bot, written down.
Milestone 1: the bot on one channel
Paid when it answers your real questions within the guardrails and hands over to a person in a test run you take part in.
Milestone 2: launch
Paid when the bot is live on its channel with metering and caps, accepted against the agreed checks.
Afterwards: tuning
Transcript reviews and new channels are small priced changes, or hours on a maintenance plan.
Clients in India pay in rupees; everyone else pays in US dollars, at the same price. A change during the build is priced before it is built. How milestone payments work in full is on pricing, and when a fixed price suits you is in fixed price vs time and materials.

Outside the chatbot range
Not in the range
- The AI provider's bill for each turn, and any messaging platform's fees, which are charged to your accounts.
- Writing or cleaning up your help content. The bot answers from what exists; gaps are listed for your team to fill.
- A chatbot builder for your own customers: that is a SaaS product, priced with the SaaS ranges.
- Voice. Speech adds latency, accents and cost, and is scoped separately where typing is the real barrier.
- Staffing the inbox. The bot hands over; your people answer.
What we could not confirm
- We have no support-cost or response-time data of our own for ConferBot's customers, so we quote none.
- Herb's per-turn costs are development telemetry; LeafRanger's paid plans are not live, so there is no production bill yet.
- Per-turn prices move when providers change their rates; the figures are dated on the running costs page.
Bring these to a chatbot quote
Most of a chatbot quote is decided by these answers. Pull a month of real questions from your inbox before the call.
- The 20 questions customers ask most, from real tickets, not a guess.
- Where the true answers live today: help articles, documents, your database.
- The first channel: your website, or the messaging app your customers use.
- Whether the bot only answers, or should change things in your product.
- Who takes over a conversation, and in which hours.
- How many conversations a month you expect in the first quarter.
- Whether your customers or your team pay for the AI usage.
AI chatbot cost: what buyers ask
How much does a custom AI chatbot cost to build?
Our quoted range is ₹2.5–5 lakh ($2,500–5,500) for a website or WhatsApp bot that answers from your documents and hands over to a person, and ₹5–10 lakh ($5,500–10,500) for an in-product assistant that takes actions with routing, metering and caps. The Discovery Sprint fixes the price.
What does each chatbot conversation cost after launch?
It depends on how many turns need a larger model. On our plant assistant a turn on the larger model measured about $0.01 and one on the small model $0.0004 in development telemetry. We measure your cost per conversation on a test bot before you commit to the build.
Is a WhatsApp chatbot more expensive than a website chatbot?
A little, because each messaging channel has its own message formats, limits and approval rules, and conversations have to reach your inbox. One channel is in the bot range either way; each extra channel is added work.
Why does an assistant that takes actions cost more than one that answers?
Because every action needs a typed operation, a permission check and an undo, and has to be tested like any other feature. Answering only needs good sources and guardrails. In AskForth, each change the AI makes to a form is one undoable step.
Should we build a chatbot or subscribe to a chatbot builder?
Subscribe if a hosted builder already does what you need; ConferBot, which we built for its owners, starts with a free plan. Build when the bot has to read your own records or act inside your product. Our build vs buy comparison goes through the trade-offs.
How do you keep a chatbot's AI bill from growing faster than its users?
Route simple turns to a small model, cap messages per plan, cache what repeats, and meter every call so a change shows up in a day, not on the invoice. Herb's routing rules and daily caps are an example.
