Marketplace app development cost in 2026: what two sides and a ledger really cost
Updated · our quoted ranges, at ₹95 = $1, ₹127 = £1 and ₹25.9 = AED 1 on 3 November 2026
Quick answer
A two-sided marketplace app costs ₹6–12.5 lakh ($6,500–13,000) for an MVP with a customer app, a provider app and an admin console that take bookings and payments, and ₹12–25 lakh ($12,500–26,500) for a full platform with a ledger, payouts, a vendor console and trust and dispute tools. These are our quoted ranges, set by marketplaces we built such as Trainr, and your fixed price comes out of a two-week Discovery Sprint.
How much does a marketplace app cost, MVP to full platform?
A marketplace is the sum of three products and the money between them. The buyer side and the seller side are visible; the ledger that records every sale, commission and refund is not, and it is where the expensive mistakes live. The range moves mostly with how money flows and how much trust tooling your team needs.
MVP
₹6–12.5 lakh
$6,500–13,000
A customer app, a provider app and an admin console, with bookings and payments.
The MVP lets one buyer and one seller complete a real, paid transaction: seller sign-up with verification, listings and search that fit your market, a booking or order with one state machine both apps share, card or UPI payments with commission recorded, payout requests released by a person, and an operator console with an audit trail.
- UK, for reference
- £4,500–10,000
- UAE, for reference
- AED 23,000–48,500
Full two-sided platform
₹12–25 lakh
$12,500–26,500
Adds the ledger, payouts, a vendor console and the trust and dispute tools.
The full platform adds what volume demands: a ledger where every sale and refund sums to zero across buyer, seller and platform, earnings held until a settlement date, an approval queue for payouts, a vendor console, reviews, disputes with held amounts, and packages, subscriptions or multi-seller carts where the business sells them.
- UK, for reference
- £9,500–19,500
- UAE, for reference
- AED 46,500–96,500
Our quoted ranges for builds of this size, not a client's fee. Dollars, pounds and dirhams are the rupee range at ₹95 = $1, ₹127 = £1 and ₹25.9 = AED 1 on 3 November 2026, rounded to the nearest 500: the price is the same wherever you are. Clients in India are quoted and invoiced in rupees and everyone else in US dollars, so the pound and dirham figures are for reference. Every app type is compared in the App Development Cost Index 2026, and the build itself is described on Marketplace App Development.
Which marketplace decisions move the price?
Two marketplaces with the same pitch can sit at opposite ends of the range. These are the decisions that put them there, from builds we have shipped, tagged with where each usually lands.
Features
What a transaction isMVP
A single booking is the cheapest shape. Trainr sells services, packages with duration discounts and individual classes with capacity and a waitlist; each shape multiplies booking states and refund cases.
MatchingMVP
Search with filters and a distance sort is the low end; Trainr scores trainers by distance across five kinds of record. Timed offers to selected sellers, as in a delivery app, is the high end.
Chat between buyer and sellerFull platform
Real-time chat needs presence, delivery to every device and moderation. Until both sides are active, booking notes and notifications carry the conversation.
Reviews and disputesFull platform
Reviews need real transactions behind them. Disputes need held amounts: LeafRanger's vendor finance holds the amount of an open dispute until it is decided.
Integrations
Card and UPI payments with one webhookMVP
Trainr takes card payments through Stripe with a single webhook consumer, so no payment event is processed twice. Indian marketplaces usually take UPI and cards through Razorpay.
Payouts to sellersMVP
Manual release by a person is safe at launch; automatic payouts are worth it once volume makes manual release slow and the fraud patterns are known.
Maps and locationMVP
Distance search can run in your own database. Live tracking and route lines are paid calls and belong only where the service moves.
Accounting and tax exportsLater
Invoices per seller and tax reports follow the first months of real sales.
Roles
Buyer and seller in one app or twoMVP
Trainr serves clients and trainers from one React Native app; Pakka splits customers and drivers into two. Each separate app is its own screens, release and store listing.
A seller web consoleFull platform
LeafRanger's nurseries run their shops from a vendor console with listings that go to admin review, orders, payouts, buyer messages and team seats across four roles.
Operators with different powersMVP
Who can refund, release a payout or suspend a seller is decided per role, and every action lands in an audit trail.
Several kinds of sellerLater
EverybodysPet serves walkers, sitters, groomers, trainers and clinics through one services marketplace; each kind adds its own listing and verification rules.
Compliance
Seller verificationMVP
You decide who can sell before customers meet them. EverybodysPet checks documents against each country's list; at launch approval can be a person in the console.
Commission and cash bookingsFull platform
On EverybodysPet the commission is 20% by default per market and can be overridden; on a cash booking the platform's share is a debit on the provider's wallet, so a cash job still records what the platform earned.
Tax per marketLater
VAT or GST on commission, tax-inclusive or exclusive prices and registration numbers are product decisions as much as accounting ones.
Account deletion and data rightsMVP
Both stores require in-app deletion, and data laws such as the DPDP Act in India and the UAE's PDPL shape what you keep and for how long.
Marketplace MVP vs full two-sided platform
The MVP is not a smaller marketplace; it is a complete transaction with fewer shapes of transaction around it. Rebuilding money later is the most expensive fix there is, so even the MVP records commission properly.
| Part | MVP | Full two-sided platform |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer side | Sign-up, search that fits the market, booking or order, payment | Adds packages, subscriptions or bundles, reviews and in-app chat |
| Seller side | Sign-up with verification, listings, bookings, payout requests | Adds a web console with orders, payouts, buyer messages and team seats |
| Money | Payments in, commission recorded, earnings held, payouts released by a person | A ledger where every sale and refund sums to zero, settlement dates and an approval queue |
| Trust | Manual seller approval and an audit trail | Document checks per country, moderation queues and disputes with held amounts |
| Operator console | Users, sellers, bookings, refunds and payouts | A reconciliation check on the ledger and per-market settings |
| Markets | One city, one currency | A data model where each country is a record, switched on one by one |
| Platforms | Android app and a web console | Android and iPhone from one React Native codebase |
Start with the MVP when you still need to prove that sellers will join and buyers will pay. Price the full platform when money already moves through spreadsheets and the ledger is the thing you are buying.
What a marketplace costs every month after launch
A marketplace's monthly bills follow its transactions: the gateway takes a fee on every payment, payouts can carry their own fee, and real-time features cost server time. We price these in the Discovery Sprint, alongside the architecture.
- Payment gateway fee on each paymentSet by the gateway and the card or UPI type; the Stripe and Razorpay calculators work it outPer payment
- Payout feesBank transfers to sellers, depending on the route you pickPer payout
- Real-time chat and presenceSocket servers and a cache; on Trainr, unread counts moved from 20 database aggregations per message in a 20-person group to one counterServer time
- Scheduled jobsTrainr runs nine, from renewals and missed sessions to settling the ledger and deleting accounts on requestServer time
- Maps, only if the service movesOn a delivery marketplace like Pakka, maps is most of the third-party cost of a tripPer trip
- Store developer accounts and hostingOpened in your company's nameYearly / monthly
- Maintenance after launchCare ₹20,000 ($210) · Grow ₹45,000 ($470) · Partner ₹95,000 ($1,000), a monthfrom ₹20,000
We publish the costs we have measured on running costs; the Stripe fee calculator and Razorpay fee calculator price your own payment mix, and maintenance is a monthly plan. Maintenance plans are priced on app maintenance plans.
How long a marketplace app takes, from our builds
Elapsed time follows scope. LeafRanger, our own app with a multi-vendor plant shop, went from the start of build work to the end of the build in 12 weeks. Trainr, a full two-sided marketplace with 199 screens and page routes, was built between May 2025 and May 2026 and ran 15 months to its handover with release work.
- Weeks 1–2
Discovery Sprint
Both sides' journeys, the money model and the operator's day as a clickable prototype; ledger rules and booking states written down before any code.
- Milestone 1
One transaction, end to end
Seller sign-up, a listing, a booking, a payment, commission in the ledger, and the console screens to see it.
- Milestone 2
Trust, refunds and payouts
Verification, refunds as linked entries, payout requests and their approval queue, notifications and in-app account deletion.
- Milestone 3
Launch and the first weeks
Store listings, production servers and monitoring, then a close watch on the first real transactions and reconciliations.

Three marketplace-shaped builds of very different size; each row says where its clock starts and stops. Every row, with its start and end points, is on build timelines.
How a marketplace build is paid for
A fixed price only protects you if each payment buys something you can use. On a marketplace that means paying for a transaction that works before paying for the features around it.
Discovery Sprint: ₹1,50,000 ($1,600), 2 weeks
Scope, user flows, a clickable prototype, the architecture, a risk list and a fixed-price quote in milestones. Paid up front; the full fee is credited to the build if it starts within 60 days of the walkthrough.
A written scope and price
The fixed price, the milestones and the acceptance checks for each, including every role's permissions and the refund cases, signed before work starts.
Milestone 1: the first transaction
Paid when a test buyer books and pays a test seller and you can see the commission and the held earnings in the console.
Milestone 2: trust and money
Paid when verification, refunds and the payout queue pass their checks with test money.
Milestone 3: launch
Store release, production and go-live, accepted on the live platform, then a maintenance plan if you want us to stay.
Clients in India pay in rupees; everyone else pays in US dollars, at the same price. A change during the build is priced before it is built. How milestone payments work in full is on pricing, and when a fixed price suits you is in fixed price vs time and materials.
Marketplaces behind these ranges
Each range on this page traces back to a marketplace we built or are building, with its stage stated the way the case study states it.
Live
Trainr
A UAE marketplace of personal trainers and clients in one React Native app, with Stripe payments, a unified ledger, payouts approved in the console and a superadmin console. The Android app is live on Google Play; we handed the platform to Trainr's developer on 13 August 2026.
- 199 screens and page routes
- 978 backend HTTP endpoints
Live
Pakka Logistics
Senders and drivers on two apps, with a driver wallet on a ledger, prepaid plans or commission, and withdrawals through an approval queue in the console.
- Both Android apps live on Google Play
Launching
LeafRanger
Our own plant-care app with a multi-vendor shop: checkout splits into one order per shop, nurseries run a vendor console, and the admin console handles moderation, disputes, payouts and per-country markets. Shop checkout still runs on a payment simulator.
- 93 screens in the mobile app
- 81 endpoints in the console API
Built
EverybodysPet
Our own animal-welfare platform with a pet-services marketplace, a provider wallet on a ledger and verification per country. Built and verified on our machines, not deployed.
- 20% default commission per market
- 89 model files identical in both backends
What the marketplace ranges do not cover
Not in the range
- Gateway, payout and hosting bills, which go to your accounts.
- A selling-your-own-products store. If you are the only seller, that is an online store, often on Shopify or WooCommerce: see e-commerce development.
- Recruiting sellers and buyers. Software does not solve the cold-start problem; a launch plan does.
- Legal terms for each side and tax registration in each market.
- Several countries at launch. The data model allows it; switching each market on is priced when you need it.
What we could not confirm
- We publish no transaction volumes or revenue for any marketplace we built; none of our case studies has figures we can source.
- LeafRanger's shop and EverybodysPet's marketplace have not taken a real payment yet, so their money paths are tested, not proven in production.
- These ranges are for builds of this size, never what a client paid.
Answer these before you ask for a marketplace quote
These answers change a marketplace quote more than any feature list. Bring them to the first call, or run the marketplace launch checklist first.
- Who sells, who buys, and which side you will recruit first.
- What one transaction is: a booking, an order, a package, a subscription.
- How the platform earns: commission, a seller plan, a buyer fee, or a mix.
- Whether money ever moves in cash, and who owes whom when it does.
- How sellers are checked before they can sell.
- One app with roles, or separate apps for each side.
- Which city or country first, and which currency.
Marketplace app cost: the questions we get
How much does a two-sided marketplace app cost to build?
Our quoted range is ₹6–12.5 lakh ($6,500–13,000) for an MVP with a buyer side, a seller side and an admin console, and ₹12–25 lakh ($12,500–26,500) for a full platform with a ledger, payouts, a vendor console and dispute tools. A Discovery Sprint turns your version into a fixed price.
Why does the ledger make a marketplace cost more than a booking app?
Because every sale, commission and refund has to be recorded for three parties and balance. On Trainr each event writes a group of entries for client, trainer and platform that must sum to zero, and a reconciliation check lists any group that does not. That is code, tests and console screens a single-seller app never needs.
Can a marketplace MVP pay sellers by hand at first?
Yes, and we usually recommend it. A person approves each payout in the console until you trust the patterns, while the ledger records everything properly from day one. Automatic payouts come later, once volume makes manual release slow.
Is one app for both sides cheaper than two separate apps?
Usually, because one app is one codebase, one release and one store listing. Trainr serves clients and trainers from one React Native app. Two apps make sense when the two days have nothing in common, as with Pakka's customers and drivers.
Does adding a second country raise a marketplace's cost?
Not if the data model allows it from the start: EverybodysPet treats each country as a record with its own commission, documents and tax. Switching a market on still takes work, priced when you need it rather than in the first build.
What does a marketplace cost per month after launch?
Mostly per-transaction fees from the payment gateway, any payout fees, hosting and a maintenance plan. Maps only matter if the service moves. We size these in discovery; our running costs page shows the ones we have measured.
