In-house team or outsourcing to India: which is right for your product now?
Build in-house when software is what you sell and you will change it every week for years. Outsource when you need a product built and launched before a permanent team makes sense, and plan the handover from the first day. Outsourcing to India works when the scope is written down, the code and accounts are in your name, and someone on your side accepts or rejects each milestone; without those, the saving disappears.

How do the options compare?
| What matters | In-house team | Outsourced studio in India |
|---|---|---|
| Cost shape | Salaries every month, whether or not there is work. Levels.fyi's self-reported median for a senior software engineer in Bengaluru was ₹55,77,611 a year on 20 October 2026, before recruiting, equipment and management time. | A fixed price per build, then a maintenance plan if you want one. Ours start at ₹20,000 or $350 a month. |
| Getting started | Recruiting, interviews and notice periods before the first commit. | A short call, then a fixed price, usually within 48 hours. The start date depends on the studio's capacity, so ask for it. |
| Where the knowledge lives | With your staff, for as long as they stay. | In the studio, unless it is written down and handed over. Insist on a written handover record and code in your own repository. |
| Day-to-day control | Total. You reprioritise every morning if you want to. | Through the scope and milestones, with a direct line to the lead engineer. |
| Working hours | Yours. | Indian working hours (IST). We offer no 24/7 cover; our Partner maintenance plan answers critical issues within 4 business hours, Indian time. |
| Single point of failure | A team of one is a risk: if your only engineer leaves, so does the system's knowledge. | The same risk in a small studio. We are two engineers, and on 14 of our 18 projects with code a single engineer wrote all the code, which is why we keep a written record. |
Which should you pick, and when?
In-house team: pick it when
Software is your product, the roadmap is long, changes are weekly, and you can afford at least two engineers so knowledge does not rest with one person.
Outsourced studio in India: pick it when
You need a first version launched, you have no technical co-founder yet, the budget is fixed, or the build needs a specialism (payments, live tracking, store billing) that you will not need full time afterwards.
Both, in sequence: pick it when
Outsource the build, then hire your first engineer and hand over to them with a written record, as Trainr did with its incoming developer in August 2026.
What does a senior in-house engineer cost in Bengaluru?
Levels.fyi, which collects self-reported pay, put the median total pay of a senior software engineer in Bengaluru at ₹55,77,611 a year on 20 October 2026, from 4,824 submissions. Its data leans towards product companies and global capability centres, so treat it as a guide to the top of the market rather than a quote.
Pay is only part of it. Add recruiting time, equipment, someone to set priorities and review the work, and the months before a new hire knows the system. For a founder outside India, compare the outsourcing price with the local cost of the same seniority in your own city.
What must stay in your hands when you outsource?
The code, in a repository your organisation owns. Every account in your company's name: app-store developer accounts, cloud hosting, the domain, payment gateways, error monitoring and paid APIs. The release signing material, stored where you control it. A list of every scheduled job and webhook.
This is what made Trainr's handover work. On 13 August 2026 all four repositories went to the client's GitHub organisation, error monitoring moved to the client's own organisation, and the client's developer received deploy and rollback runbooks, environment templates and a written list of open items with an owner for each.
How do working hours work with a Bangalore studio?
We work Indian business hours and our clients are in India, the UAE, the UK, Canada and the US. Plan for calls at the start or end of our day, and agree in the contract how quickly urgent issues are answered.
Our maintenance plans put that in writing: next working day on Care, the same working day on Grow, and critical issues within 4 business hours (IST) on Partner. None of them is round-the-clock cover, and we do not sell any that is.
When should you bring development in-house?
When the changes you need are weekly rather than monthly, when the product's roadmap runs for years, and when you can afford a team rather than a single hire. That is usually after launch, once you know what users actually want.
Bring it in with a handover, not a cliff edge. LetSlic took over four codebases from us in July 2026 after 13 months of work; Trainr's incoming developer took over from a written record. Either way, the next team should be able to build, release and roll back without calling us.
When are we the wrong choice?
- You need someone on call at night. We do not offer 24/7 cover.
- You need a team larger than two engineers. We are two.
- Nobody on your side can review and accept milestones.
Questions people ask
How do we avoid lock-in when we outsource development to India?
Keep the code in your own repository from the first commit, put every account in your company's name, and make a written handover record part of the contract. Then any competent team, including your own hire, can take over without the original studio.
Is one senior hire in Bengaluru cheaper than outsourcing the build?
On paper it can be: Levels.fyi's self-reported median for a senior engineer in Bengaluru was ₹55,77,611 a year on 20 October 2026. But one engineer is a single point of failure and needs managing, so compare the cost of a reliable team of two or more, not one salary.
Can an outsourced studio hand over to our first in-house engineer?
Yes, and it should plan for it. When Trainr hired its own developer, we handed over the repositories, runbooks, environment templates, a media-bucket export and a written list of open items, and the new developer was committing within a week of the handover.
Will a Bangalore studio be online when our team in London or Toronto starts work?
For London, our afternoons overlap with your mornings. For Toronto and the rest of North America the overlap is short, so agree call times and response times in writing before the build starts.
What is the biggest risk when outsourcing a build?
Accepting work nobody on your side has checked. Each milestone should name what is delivered and how you will test it, and someone in your company has to do that test before the payment goes out.
