An Upwork alternative for your app build: when a fixed-price studio fits better
Stay on Upwork if you want to choose from many freelancers, pay by the hour or by the task, and vet people yourself; Upwork's own help pages say vetting and choosing freelancers is the client's responsibility. Consider us if you want one fixed price for a whole product, built and then maintained by the same senior engineers. We are a studio of two engineers, not a marketplace, so we cannot offer a choice of many freelancers.
CountryDevs is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Upwork. We are a software studio, not a marketplace. Every statement about Upwork on this page comes from Upwork's own help centre, checked on 20 October 2026.

How do the options compare?
| What matters | Freelancer hired on a marketplace | CountryDevs |
|---|---|---|
| Finding someone | Post a job and compare proposals, or buy a ready-made package: Upwork's Project Catalog lists projects with price, scope and timing. | One short call, then a fixed price for the whole build, usually within 48 hours. |
| Checking skills | Your job. Upwork says it screens users for eligibility to join, that you are responsible for vetting and choosing freelancers, and that it is not responsible for the quality of their work. | Judge us on products you can open: Trainr and LetSlic on Google Play, Pakka's platform at pakkalogistics.com. |
| Fees on top of the work | On Upwork's free Basic plan, a client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on payments to freelancers, plus a one-time Contract Initiation Fee of $0.99 to $14.99 per contract. Freelancers pay their own 0–15% service fee. | No marketplace in between: the fixed price and its milestone payments are set out in the contract. |
| How payment is protected | Fixed-price milestones are funded in advance and released when you approve the work; you have 14 days to review. Upwork's hourly protection needs the desktop time tracker and does not cover fixed-price work. | Milestone payments set out in the contract, each tied to delivered work you can check. |
| Who runs the project | You: tasks, priorities, reviews and releases. | Our lead engineer runs the build and talks to you directly; you accept each milestone. |
| After launch | A new contract, if the same freelancer is still available. | Maintenance quoted with the build; monthly plans from ₹20,000 or $350, with no 24/7 cover. |
Which should you pick, and when?
Stay on Upwork: pick it when
The work is a defined task of days or a few weeks, you want many proposals to compare, you need a skill outside our stack, or you are comfortable vetting and managing a freelancer yourself.
Choose CountryDevs: pick it when
You want a whole product, such as an MVP, a marketplace, a SaaS platform or a React Native app, delivered at a fixed price by one accountable lead engineer, and kept running afterwards by the same people.
What do Upwork's fees add to a project?
Upwork's help centre, checked on 20 October 2026, says clients on the free Basic plan pay a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on payments to freelancers, plus a one-time Contract Initiation Fee of $0.99 to $14.99 for each new contract. Other Upwork help pages mention a 5% rate and a reduced 3% for eligible clients paying by US bank account, so check the fee shown at checkout.
As arithmetic: at 7.99%, $10,000 paid to freelancers carries up to $799 in client fees. Freelancers pay their own service fee of 0% to 15% per contract, according to Upwork's help centre.
Who checks a freelancer's skills on Upwork?
You do. Upwork's roles-and-responsibilities page says it screens freelancers as users, to make sure they are eligible to join, and that clients are responsible for vetting and choosing them. Upwork's Expert-Vetted status covers the top 1% of a field after an interview, and is typically invitation-only.
If you can read code, run a paid trial task and check references, that works. If you cannot, the risk you carry is less about the fee and more about choosing well.
How is a fixed price with a studio different from a fixed-price contract on Upwork?
On Upwork, you fund each milestone before work begins, the freelancer submits it, and you have 14 days to approve it or ask for changes before the funds are released automatically. The scope of each milestone is whatever you and the freelancer write.
With us, the fixed price covers the whole product as scoped on the call, the milestone payments are set out in the contract, and the engineer you talk to is the one who builds it. There is no platform in the middle, so the contract and our record are what you rely on.
How do you move an unfinished Upwork project to someone else?
Start with steps that do not involve us. Ask the freelancer to move the code into a repository your organisation owns, with its full history. Collect every account the app depends on in your company's name: store accounts, hosting, the domain, payment gateways and API keys. Ask for a written note of what works, what does not and what is half-built.
Then have someone read the code before you spend more on it. Our code audit takes five working days, costs ₹90,000 or $1,900 for one app, and ends with a verdict per area and a fixed-price quote to fix or take it over. Any competent team can do the same.
Who should not switch?
- Your task is a few days of work. A marketplace freelancer or a Project Catalog package is built for that.
- You want to compare dozens of proposals before choosing.
- You need skills outside JavaScript and TypeScript, such as native Swift, PHP or data science.
- You want to pay by the hour for a build. We quote builds at a fixed price.
- You need someone on call around the clock.
Questions people ask
How much does Upwork charge clients?
Upwork's help centre, checked on 20 October 2026, says the free Basic plan carries a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on payments to freelancers, plus a one-time Contract Initiation Fee of $0.99 to $14.99 per contract. Some help pages give 5%, with 3% for eligible clients paying by US bank account.
Does Upwork vet freelancers before you hire them?
Only for eligibility to use the platform. Upwork's help centre says clients are responsible for vetting and choosing freelancers and that Upwork is not responsible for the quality of their work. Its Expert-Vetted group is the exception, and is typically invitation-only.
Is there a platform fee when you hire CountryDevs directly?
No. There is no marketplace in between: you pay the fixed price set out in the contract, in the milestone payments the contract lists.
Can CountryDevs finish an app that an Upwork freelancer left half-built?
Often, yes, but we read the code first. A code audit (five working days, ₹90,000 or $1,900) tells both sides what exists, what is risky and whether to fix, refactor or rebuild each part, and ends with a fixed-price quote.
What is Upwork's Project Catalog?
A list of ready-to-buy packages from freelancers, each with its price, terms, scope and timing, so you can buy without posting a job. Upwork's help centre put it at more than 290,000 projects when we checked on 20 October 2026.
