A Toptal alternative: when you need a product delivered, not a person to manage
Choose Toptal if you want to hire a screened developer by the hour, part time or full time; Toptal says about 3% of applicants pass its screening and starts engagements with a trial of up to two weeks. Choose us if you want a product delivered at a fixed price by a studio that runs its own work, from scope to maintenance.
CountryDevs is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Toptal. We are a two-engineer software studio, not a talent network. Every statement about Toptal on this page comes from Toptal's own website, checked on 20 October 2026.

How do the options compare?
| What matters | Screened talent network | CountryDevs |
|---|---|---|
| What you are buying | A developer hired on an hourly, part-time or full-time basis, as Toptal's developers page puts it. | A scoped product at a fixed price, and the management of the work that goes with it. |
| How quality is checked | Toptal screens applicants for language, personality, skills, a live interview and test projects, and says about 3% pass. | No screening funnel. You judge the two engineers on shipped work you can open, such as Trainr and LetSlic on Google Play. |
| How fast it starts | Toptal's pages differ: its FAQ says it introduces candidates within 24 hours in almost all cases, while its developers page says introductions come within days and hiring typically takes about 48 hours. | A fixed price, usually within 48 hours of a short call. |
| Trial and first step | A trial period of up to two weeks; Toptal says you are not billed if you are not completely satisfied. | A short call and a fixed-price quote. When the scope is still loose, a paid two-week Discovery Sprint (₹1,50,000 or $2,900) comes first; you keep its scope and prototype, and the fee is credited to the build if it starts within 60 days. |
| Price visibility | Toptal's FAQ and developers page publish no rates. A flat $79 monthly subscription is charged if you proceed with talent matching. | Entry offers priced on our site; builds at a fixed price after a call. |
Which should you pick, and when?
Screened talent network: pick it when
You have a product team and a tech lead, you need extra hands or a specific skill under your own management, and you want the flexibility to scale hours up and down.
Choose CountryDevs: pick it when
You have no in-house tech lead, you want an outcome at a known price rather than hours, the product is the size two engineers can build, and it fits our JavaScript and TypeScript stack.
What does Toptal's 3% figure tell you, and what does it leave out?
It describes how Toptal screens individuals: language and personality, an in-depth skill review, a live screening and test projects, after which it says about 3% of applicants remain. That is useful if your problem is finding a capable person.
It does not tell you who will scope the product, decide the architecture, run the releases or own the outcome when you hire one developer, so agree that before you start. Toptal's FAQ also links to managed-delivery services, which this page does not compare.
How do Toptal's trial and fees work?
Toptal's FAQ, checked on 20 October 2026, says each engagement starts with a trial period of up to two weeks and that you are not billed if you are not completely satisfied. It charges a flat $79 monthly subscription if you go ahead with talent matching, invoices typically twice a month, and does not publish rates.
Our first step is different: a short call and a fixed-price quote, usually within 48 hours, or, when the scope is still loose, a paid two-week Discovery Sprint at ₹1,50,000 or $2,900. You keep the sprint's scope, prototype and architecture whether or not we build, and the fee is credited to the build if it starts within 60 days.
Do you need a person or an outcome?
If you can describe your product's next six months as a backlog and you have someone to run it, you need people, and a network is a sensible place to find them. If you can describe it as a product with a launch date and a budget, and nobody to run engineering, you need an outcome, and that is what a studio sells.
Many founders need both in order: a studio builds and launches the first version at a fixed price, then a hire, from a network or elsewhere, takes it over with a written handover.
Who should not switch?
- You need several engineers starting at once. We are two.
- Your stack is outside JavaScript and TypeScript.
- You need engineers working North American hours every day. We work Indian hours.
Questions people ask
What is Toptal's monthly subscription fee?
Toptal's FAQ, checked on 20 October 2026, says it charges a flat monthly subscription fee of $79 if you decide to proceed with talent matching through Toptal. It does not publish the talent's own rates.
How long is Toptal's trial period?
Up to two weeks, according to Toptal's FAQ, which also says you will not be billed if you are not completely satisfied with the trial.
Is a Toptal freelancer or a studio better for a first MVP?
It depends on whether you have a tech lead. With one, a screened freelancer can add capacity under their direction. Without one, a studio that scopes, builds and releases at a fixed price takes on the part a freelancer would leave with you.
