AI guardrails
Rules wrapped around an AI feature, covering what it may discuss, what it may claim and when it must stop, enforced by settings and code rather than hope.

What does AI guardrails mean in practice?
Guardrails define the edges of an AI feature: subjects it shouldn't discuss, phrases it mustn't use, disclaimers it must show, budgets it can't exceed and the points at which it hands over to a person. Some live in the instructions; the reliable ones are checks in code that run on every output.
They protect your brand and limit liability. An assistant giving confident legal or medical advice, inventing an offer or wandering off-topic can do real harm under your name.
Test them like any other feature: write the questions a user should not get an answer to, and see what happens.

Where has AI guardrails come up in our builds?
Each AI agent gets a persona, its own knowledge and guardrails on topics it may and may not discuss, and escalates to a person on negative sentiment, low confidence, a turn limit or a time limit.
Copilots in legal, health, finance, wellness and nutrition carry a professional disclaimer saying they give information, drafts and preparation rather than a licensed professional's advice, and the home page says so too.
Drafts go through deterministic lint for banned phrasing, false precision and invented people before the support gate checks any claim about the customer.
Common questions about AI guardrails
Do I need disclaimers on an AI assistant?
In regulated areas such as legal, medical or financial topics, yes, and they should say plainly what the assistant is not. Copilotly marks those domains on its home page and on each copilot.
Can clever users talk their way past AI guardrails?
Guardrails that live only in the instructions can be talked around. Checks in code on the output, limits on what the AI can do and a handover to a person are much harder to get past.
