Automated testing

Code that checks your product's behaviour every time something changes, so a fix in one place doesn't quietly break another.

What does automated testing mean in practice?

Automated tests run in seconds or minutes and confirm that features still behave: an API returns the right answer, a payment is recorded once, a page renders. A large suite is a safety net that lets a team change code with confidence.

What the tests check matters more than how many there are. A green suite can still miss the real risk if tests use stand-ins that never behave like production, or if a checker only looks at part of the system.

The strongest tests state a measurable claim, such as 'one route fetch per leg', and pair it with a negative control that fails if the code simply stops doing anything.

Automated testing at a glance

Checks
That existing behaviour still works after changes
Weak spot
Stand-ins that never misbehave like the real thing
Strong pattern
A measurable claim plus a negative control

Where has automated testing come up in our builds?

The latest full regression ran 1,899 checks across 83 suites with none failing. On 17 October 2026 we also found the model drift checker had compared only a hand-kept list of 50 files, so 22 shared files went unchecked while every check read green; it now compares every file in both backends.
EverybodysPet (built, not deployed)
The live-tracking test replays a simulated 25-minute drive and asserts that 151 position updates produce one route fetch, and a second test makes sure a driver who really leaves the route does trigger a refetch.
Pakka Logistics
The mail test suite's fake server only ever returned tidy rows, so it now misbehaves on purpose; the API suite stood at 346 passing tests after the mail work.

Common questions about automated testing

How many automated tests should my app have?

Enough to cover every money path, permission and core flow, with tests for failures as well as successes. A count alone says little; ask what the tests would catch.

Can the tests pass while the product is broken?

Yes, when they test a simplified stand-in. AlwaysLoud's suite used a fake renderer, so the first real Hindi and Tamil video renders failed on fonts no test had ever drawn.
