Google Maps API cost calculator

Since 1 March 2025 every Google Maps Platform SKU has its own free monthly usage instead of a shared $200 credit, and accounts billed in India get a cheaper price list with larger free caps. Enter your monthly volumes to see the bill for each SKU, the free usage applied, and the cost per delivery or per active user.

  • Free usage is per SKU, resets on the 1st of each month (midnight US Pacific) and is counted across every project on the billing account.
  • India prices apply when the account is billed in India and a large majority of the usage is in India. India-priced accounts can't buy subscription plans.

Maps & AI Cost Audit: ₹45,000 / $950

Below $500 a month an audit's fee is hard to earn back, so start with the free fixes: cache routes and geocodes, use session tokens for Autocomplete, and request only Essentials fields.

How is a Google Maps Platform bill calculated?

Each SKU (a billable action such as a map load, a geocode or a route) is counted separately for the calendar month. The first part of each SKU's count is free: on the global list 10,000 events for Essentials SKUs, 5,000 for Pro and 1,000 for Enterprise; on the India list 70,000, 35,000 and 7,000.

After the free usage, events are charged per 1,000 in volume bands. The global list has five bands, the cheapest from 5,000,000 events a month; the India list has two, with the second from 5,000,000. The price of a band applies only to the events inside it, so a bill is the sum of every band you reach.

A request is billed at the one highest SKU whose features it uses: asking Place Details for the place's name makes it a Pro request, and traffic-aware routing makes a route Pro. Matrix requests bill per element, origins times destinations, so a 10 × 10 matrix is 100 billable events.

monthly cost = Σ over SKUs Σ over bands (events in band ÷ 1,000 × band price)
events in band exclude the SKU's free monthly usage

How to estimate your Google Maps API bill

  1. 1
Pick the price listIndia if your account is billed in India and most usage is there; global otherwise.
  2. 2
Enter monthly volumesTake them from the Google Cloud console's API metrics, or estimate per user or per delivery and multiply.
  3. 3
Set the Place Details fieldsChoose the highest field group your app requests; the place name alone makes a request Pro.
  4. 4
Read the bill and the biggest lineThe table shows each SKU's free usage and cost; the largest line is usually where caching or a cheaper SKU saves the most.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Google Maps API still free up to $200 a month?
No. On 1 March 2025 Google replaced the $200 monthly credit with free usage per SKU: 10,000 events a month for most Essentials SKUs, 5,000 for Pro and 1,000 for Enterprise on the global price list.
Is Google Maps cheaper for apps in India?
Yes, for accounts billed in India with most usage in India. Since 1 August 2024 the India list prices most SKUs lower, and since March 2025 it gives seven times the global free usage: 70,000 Essentials events a month.
Do map loads in a mobile app cost money?
Not by themselves: Android and iOS SDK map loads without a map ID bill to a no-cost SKU. They become Dynamic Maps loads when the app uses a map ID, for example for cloud-based map styling.
How do delivery apps keep Google Maps costs down?
Mostly by not asking Google the same question twice: caching routes and geocodes, refreshing a route only when the driver leaves it, and sending driver positions over their own socket instead of re-routing. In Pakka, a delivery platform we built, that cut the Directions calls the apps made per delivery from about 151 to 1.
Why did my Place Details requests cost more than expected?
Because the fields you request set the SKU. The place's display name is a Pro field, so a request for it bills at the Pro rate even if everything else it asks for is Essentials.
