S3 storage cost calculator (AWS vs R2 and others)

An object storage bill has three parts: gigabytes stored per month, requests, and data transferred out (egress), and providers price each very differently. Enter your storage, requests and egress to compare a month on AWS S3 and S3-compatible providers, from their published prices.

Changes only the AWS prices. R2 and B2 each publish one price; Wasabi lists the same price for North America, EMEA and APAC.

GB-month

The average stored over the month. 1 TB is 1,000 or 1,024 GB depending on the provider.

a month

Uploads, copies and listings. R2 counts these as Class A operations, including each UploadPart of a multipart upload.

a month

Downloads and HEAD requests: "GET and all other requests" on AWS, Class B on R2.

GB a month

Downloads by your users and anything else served from the bucket to the internet.

AWS gives 100 GB a month free across all its services and regions. Untick it if other AWS services already use it.

  • Wasabi charges a minimum of 1 TB of active storage, so 1,000 GB is billed as 1,024 GB.
  • AWS's free 100 GB of internet egress is shared by all your AWS services and regions; the egress tiers apply to the GB beyond it.
  • Cloudflare rounds R2 usage up to the next billing unit: whole GB-months of storage and whole millions of operations.
  • Enter amounts in GB as each provider bills them. Wasabi's own example converts at 1,024 GB per TB; Backblaze doesn't say, so B2 storage here uses 1,000 GB per TB (at 1,024 it would be 2.3% lower).
  • Not modelled: other storage classes (such as S3 Standard-IA, Glacier and R2 Infrequent Access), retrieval fees, minimum object size and storage duration charges (Wasabi bills objects under 4 KB as 4 KB and objects deleted within 90 days for the remaining days), AWS Free Tier credits for new accounts, CDN and transfer acceleration, B2's Class D event notifications, committed-capacity discounts and taxes.
  • Prices checked 20 Oct 2026; check each provider's page before you rely on them.

How is an object storage bill calculated?

Every provider here bills the same three things in a month: the data you store, in GB-months; the requests you make, per thousand or per million; and the data transferred out to the internet, per GB. Each prices them very differently, so the cheapest provider depends on your mix.

AWS S3 Standard charges for all three. In US East (N. Virginia) storage is $0.023 per GB-month for the first 50 TB, PUT, COPY, POST and LIST requests are $0.005 per 1,000 and GET requests $0.0004 per 1,000. Internet egress is free for the first 100 GB a month, counted across all AWS services and Regions, then $0.09 per GB for the next 10 TB, falling in tiers after that. Mumbai storage is $0.025 per GB-month and its first egress tier $0.1093 per GB.

Cloudflare R2 Standard charges $0.015 per GB-month and nothing for egress, but bills operations: $4.50 per million Class A (writes and listings) and $0.36 per million Class B (reads), after a free 10 GB-month, 1 million Class A and 10 million Class B each month. Cloudflare rounds usage up to the next billing unit.

Backblaze B2 charges $6.95 per TB a month after the first 10 GB, nothing for Class A, B and C calls, and nothing for egress up to three times your average stored data, then $0.01 per GB. Wasabi charges $7.99 per TB a month with no egress or API fees, as long as monthly egress stays within your stored data, with a 1 TB minimum charge and a 90-day minimum storage duration.

monthly cost = storage + requests + egress
AWS storage = Σ tiers (GB in tier × tier price); requests = PUT ÷ 1,000 × PUT price + GET ÷ 1,000 × GET price
AWS egress = Σ tiers over (egress − 100 GB free)
R2 = ⌈GB − 10⌉ × $0.015 + ⌈(Class A − 1M) ÷ 1M⌉ × $4.50 + ⌈(Class B − 10M) ÷ 1M⌉ × $0.36
B2 = (GB − 10) ÷ 1,000 × $6.95 + max(0, egress − 3 × GB) × $0.01
Wasabi = max(GB, 1,024) ÷ 1,024 × $7.99

How to estimate a month of S3 storage costs

  1. 1
    Enter what you storeType the data you keep over the month in GB. A bucket's size in your provider's console or bill is the place to start.
  2. 2
    Enter requests and egressType the month's PUT-type and GET requests, and the GB downloaded to the internet. Your current bill or your access logs give the real numbers.
  3. 3
    Pick the AWS regionChoose US East (N. Virginia) or Asia Pacific (Mumbai) for the AWS prices; the other providers publish one price.
  4. 4
    Compare the totalsThe table splits each provider's month into storage, requests and egress. Check the notes for free allowances, minimums and the Wasabi egress policy before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost to serve 1,000 GB of downloads a month from S3?
From US East (N. Virginia), $81.00: the first 100 GB a month is free, and the other 900 GB cost $0.09 each. From Mumbai it is $98.37 at $0.1093 per GB. On R2 egress costs nothing, on B2 it is free up to three times what you store, and on Wasabi it is free while it stays within what you store.
Does Cloudflare R2 charge anything for downloads?
Not for the data: Cloudflare says egress directly from R2 is free. The requests are billed, though: each GET is a Class B operation at $0.36 per million after 10 million free a month. Cloudflare's own example of 300 million reads a month comes to $104.40, all of it operations.
Why does Wasabi bill me for 1 TB when I store less?
Wasabi has a minimum monthly charge tied to 1 TB of active storage, so 200 GB is billed as a full TB at $7.99. It also has a 90-day minimum storage duration on pay-as-you-go: delete an object earlier and you pay for the remaining days. Objects under 4 KB are billed as 4 KB.
When does Backblaze B2 charge for egress?
Only above three times your average stored data for the month, which Backblaze works out from byte-hours. Storing 1,000 GB gives 3,000 GB of free egress; anything beyond is $0.01 per GB, unless it goes through one of Backblaze's CDN or compute partners, which it lists as free.
How do I compare the storage providers I already use?
Enter each bucket's storage, requests and egress here to compare them at list prices. Storafleet, our own product, does this across live buckets: it connects the buckets you already own on more than 50 providers, including AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi and MinIO, and shows each one's size, object count and estimated monthly cost in one table. Files stay in your own buckets.
