Payments and money

Payout

Sending money a platform owes its providers, such as drivers, trainers or sellers, from their earned balance to their bank account.

What does payout mean in practice?

Marketplaces collect money from customers and pay providers later. A payout takes a provider's available balance and sends it out, by bank transfer, through a payouts API or via a connected account at the gateway. Most platforms start with a request step and an approval queue.

Trust with the supply side is won or lost here. Providers want to know what they are owed and when it will arrive; the platform needs to know the money was really earned and isn't about to be refunded.

Failures need a home. A payout that bounces must come back to the balance as a recorded entry, not vanish between systems.

Where has payout come up in our builds?

A withdrawal debits the driver's balance at once and joins an approval queue in the console. The RazorpayX path that sends and confirms payouts automatically is built and tested against its webhooks but ships switched off, so approved withdrawals go by bank transfer for now, and a failed payout comes back as a new ledger entry.

Trainers request a payout from their settled balance; an operator approves or rejects it, then releases it with a bank transfer, PayPal or cash reference recorded. A Stripe Connect transfer path is built for when trainers' Stripe accounts are connected.
Trainr
Commerce opens in a country only once there is a way to pay its sellers. The trigger was concrete: we could take payment from a buyer in Portugal but had no rail to pay a Portuguese vendor.

Common questions about payout

Should provider payouts be automatic from day one?

Not necessarily. A manual approval queue with bank transfers is a sound start while volumes are low and the rules are new; build the automatic path behind a switch and turn it on once the records have been checked against real payouts.

What happens if a payout to a provider fails?

The money should return to their balance as a recorded entry with the reason, so nothing is lost between the bank and the ledger. Trainr marks a failed release as failed instead of losing it.
