Reconciliation

Checking that your own records of money agree with each other and with what the payment provider actually moved, and flagging any difference.

What does reconciliation mean in practice?

Reconciliation compares sources that ought to match: your ledger against itself, your invoices against what the gateway collected, your subscriptions against the store's records. Anything that doesn't match is listed for a person to look at.

Small errors get caught before they compound. Without it, a missed webhook, a double refund or a rounding drift can sit unnoticed until an accountant or a provider finds it months later.

In practice it is a scheduled job plus a screen: run it daily, list the mismatches and record how each was resolved.

Where has reconciliation come up in our builds?

A reconciliation check groups the ledger by transaction group ID and lists any group more than one fil away from zero, so an operator can see at once what doesn't balance.

Before issuing an invoice, a guard refuses any invoice whose total differs from what Razorpay actually collected.

A daily job reconciles subscriptions with Google Play, and Google's real-time notifications always trigger a fresh fetch of the subscription rather than trusting the message.

Common questions about reconciliation

How often should a marketplace reconcile its money?

At least daily, and always before money leaves the business, such as before payouts are approved. Mismatches are cheapest to fix on the day they happen.

What should happen when reconciliation finds a difference?

List it with enough detail to trace it, fix it with a new correcting entry rather than an edit, and record the cause so the same gap can be closed.
