Multi-currency pricing

Selling in more than one currency, with a price set for each rather than converted on the fly, and the books kept separately per currency.

What does multi-currency pricing mean in practice?

Selling abroad raises a choice: show one currency and convert at checkout, or set a real price in each currency. Converting is quick to build but drifts as rates move and clashes with recurring billing, where the charged amount is fixed. Native prices per currency are cleaner for customers and accountants alike.

Invoices, refunds and reports all follow from that decision. A subscription should stay in the currency it was first charged in, refunds must go back in it, and revenue in rupees and dollars should be reported side by side rather than added together.

In the code, keep currencies out of hard-coded strings. Currency belongs to the country or plan record, so adding a market becomes data entry rather than a release.

Where has multi-currency pricing come up in our builds?

Version 1 priced in USD and collected INR at a daily rate with a 3% buffer. Once international cards were enabled in July 2026 we switched to native INR and USD prices set by a person, picked from the billing address and locked per subscription, and revenue dashboards show rupees and dollars side by side.
Storafleet
A Market record holds each country's currency and decimal places. A sweep found seven places where code had chosen a currency for itself, such as a fallback to INR; all now read the Market, and a checker fails on any quoted currency code outside the seed files.
EverybodysPet (built, not deployed)
Commerce is closed by default; an owner-only action opens a country only once it has a currency, a VAT rate, a shipping rate and a way to pay its sellers.

Common questions about multi-currency pricing

Should I show prices in dollars and charge in rupees?

It works for one-off payments but drifts for renewals, because the rupee amount moves with the exchange rate while a subscription charges a fixed sum. Storafleet moved from that model to native prices in each currency.

How do I add a new country's currency later?

Make currency a property of a country or plan record and keep it out of the code. A new market is then configuration plus a check, not a code change.
