URL slug generator

A URL slug is the readable part of a web address after the domain, like /how-to-build-an-app. Paste a title and the generator lowercases it, swaps spaces and punctuation for hyphens, strips accents and symbols, and can drop small words or cap the length.

Each line becomes its own slug, in the same order, so a column of titles copies straight back into a spreadsheet.

Google treats /Blog and /blog as two different URLs, so one case avoids duplicates.

Accents can become plain letters, but Devanagari, Tamil or Arabic words can't; ASCII only removes them.

How is a URL slug made from a title?

The title is split into words: runs of letters and digits, with spaces, punctuation and symbols such as & and ! treated as gaps. The words are lowercased and joined with hyphens, so there is never a hyphen at either end or two in a row. Apostrophes are dropped rather than turned into hyphens, so “Founder’s” becomes founders. Hyphens and underscores are both unreserved characters in RFC 3986, so neither needs encoding in a URL, but Google recommends hyphens.

Accented Latin letters become plain ones: the text is decomposed with Unicode NFKD, which splits é into e plus a combining accent, and the accents are removed. NFKD can't split a few letters that are separate letters in their own right, so a table maps them: ß → ss, æ → ae, ø → o, đ → d, ł → l, œ → oe, þ → th, ð → d and ı → i.

Words in other scripts, such as Hindi, Tamil or Arabic, have no plain-Latin spelling that a rule can produce, and their vowel signs are combining marks too, so stripping marks would break them. This tool keeps them by default: Google's URL guidance says to use words in your audience's language and to percent-encode non-ASCII characters in links, which the result shows. Choose ASCII only to remove them instead; the result then says which script was removed rather than dropping it silently.

Small words are removed only when you ask, from this list: a, an, the, and, or, but, nor, of, to, in, on, at, by, for, from, with, as, into, is, are, was, were, be, it, its. If every word is on the list, none are removed. A length cap drops whole words from the end until the slug fits.

title → NFKD, remove accents (é → e), map ß æ ø đ ł œ þ ð ı
      → lowercase → drop apostrophes
→ words = runs of letters, digits and marks
→ [remove small words] → [cut whole words to fit]
slug = words joined with "-"

Frequently asked questions

Should I use hyphens or underscores in a URL slug?
Hyphens. Google's URL structure guidance recommends hyphens instead of underscores to separate words, because hyphens help people and search engines identify the concepts in a URL, while underscores are commonly used to join words that belong together.
Should URL slugs be lowercase?
Lowercase is the safest choice. Google treats /APPLE and /apple as different URLs, and suggests converting all text to one case if your server treats both cases the same, so one consistent case avoids two addresses for one page.
Should I remove stop words like “a” and “the” from a slug?
It is optional. Google's URL guidance asks for readable words and doesn't mention stop words, so removing them only makes the slug shorter. Keep them when the slug reads wrongly without them, such as a title that is mostly small words.
Can a URL slug use Hindi, Tamil or Arabic words?
Yes. Google's guidance says to use words in your audience's language and to percent-encode non-ASCII characters in the href of your links, for example %E0%A4%AE… for Devanagari. This tool keeps those letters by default and shows the encoded form; choose ASCII only if your platform accepts only a–z and 0–9.
Should I change the slug of a page that is already published?
Only with a redirect. If the old URL simply disappears, links to it break. Google recommends a permanent server-side redirect (status 301 or 308) from the old URL to the new one whenever you change a page's URL.
