Static site

Ready-made HTML, CSS and JavaScript files served as they are, with no database or server code behind them, which keeps a website cheap, fast and hard to break.

What does static site mean in practice?

A static site has no logins, no database and no server of your own to patch. Pages are files, delivered by a hosting platform, and a contact form can post to a small external service that forwards each message by email.

Portfolios, brochure sites and service pages often need exactly this: something that loads quickly on a phone and stays online for years, not complex features. Updates go live as soon as new files are deployed.

Anything dynamic is the limit. Accounts, payments, dashboards and content that staff edit every week need a backend or a CMS, and bolting those on later means rebuilding parts of the site.

Where has static site come up in our builds?

Seventeen one-page portfolio sites for independent professionals are static HTML, CSS and JavaScript on Netlify, with no database, logins or server of their own; three send their contact forms to FormSubmit, which forwards each message by email. Most footers that carry a year say 2021, and those sites were still online in October 2026.

Common questions about static site

When should a static site become a web app?

When people need to sign in, pay or see content that differs per person, or when staff need to edit pages every week. Until then a static site is cheaper to keep online.

How long can a static site run without maintenance?

Years, since there is no server code to patch. Most of the portfolio sites in our collection carry a 2021 footer and were still online on Netlify in October 2026; what ages is the content and any third-party scripts they load.
